Joanne Muccio, Lead for Trauma-Informed Practice
Joanne is a trauma-informed counsellor, consultant, supervisor and trainer with over twenty years of experience helping individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences, including, childhood trauma, sexual violence and abuse, accidents, illness, physical assaults, and other horrific life changing incidents. She holds a Master’s in Counselling Studies from The University of Manchester and is trained in modalities including EMDR, Rewind Technique and Mindfulness. She is an Integrative Practitioner drawing on theories and methods from a range of modalities.
Joanne’s approach is a synthesis of humanistic, person centred, mindful, cognitive, body-focused, Heart/Brain coherence to create an individualised recovery and healing process. Psycho-education brings awareness, understanding, recognition and integration (in time) and complements the therapeutic work. She currently works with adults referred for either counselling support, psychotherapy or post-trauma support (what is referred to as psychological and emotional first aid) in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event, to help them reclaim a sense of agency in their lives.
Prior to her current role, Joanne worked at The St Mary’s Centre, the first sexual assault referral centre in the UK, serving survivors of sexual abuse both historic and current. She is a member of The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and Mindfulness Now registered teachers.
When not engaged in work, Joanne enjoys running, yoga, swimming and saunas. She spends what times she can in the hills and mountains of Northwest England, hiking and finding cold pools to plunge in to. She volunteers weekly at a theatre group for adults with down syndrome and learning difficulties where they sing, dance and have fun, it is a highlight of her week.
