Back in October I spent a day with the amazing Reiki Makster Hayley Simpson from Creative Calm, to undertake my Reiki level 1 training. Since then, I have been thinking about how these align with the work we do at Collaborate Out Loud and below are my thoughts.
In a world facing complex social challenges, leadership for social good requires more than strategy and structure. It calls for presence, authenticity and a deep commitment to collective wellbeing.
Two seemingly different frameworks, the Reiki principles and the practice of Collaborating Out Loud offer a powerful, complementary approach to this kind of leadership. When brought together, they create a human-centred, values-driven model that supports both individual integrity and collective impact.
The Reiki Principles as a Foundation for Leadership
The Reiki principles are simple yet profound daily intentions:
-
- Just for today, I will not be angry
-
- Just for today, I will not worry
-
- I will be grateful
-
- I will do my work honestly
-
- I will be kind to every living thing
While rooted in energy practice, these principles translate seamlessly into leadership behaviours. They encourage emotional regulation, ethical action, gratitude, and compassion, qualities that are essential when working towards social good.
Collaborating Out Loud: A Framework for Collective Impact
Your Collaborating Out Loud principles invite us to work in ways that are open, relational and inclusive. They emphasise:
-
- Working visibly and amplifying shared learning
-
- Building trust-based communities
-
- Embracing diversity and democratic decision-making
-
- Leading with generosity and kindness
-
- Testing ideas in real, social contexts and sharing what works [
This approach reframes leadership as something we do together, rather than something held by a few.
Where Reiki Meets Collaborating Out Loud
When we apply Reiki principles within a Collaborating Out Loud approach, something powerful happens: leadership becomes both internally grounded and externally connected.
“Just for today, I will not be angry” → Creating safe, open spaces
Collaborating Out Loud calls for amplifying ideas and voices. This requires psychological safety. By practising emotional awareness and responding rather than reacting, leaders create environments where people feel safe to contribute openly.
This is particularly important when working with communities experiencing inequality or marginalisation where trust must be built carefully and consistently.
“Just for today, I will not worry” → Embracing emergence and experimentation
The “make it real” principle encourages testing and learning in social spaces. This requires a tolerance for uncertainty.
Reiki’s emphasis on releasing worry allows leaders to stay present, adaptive and open to what emerges rather than controlling outcomes. It supports a mindset where experimentation is not only accepted but welcomed.
“I will be grateful” → Amplifying and recognising contributions
Collaborating Out Loud emphasises thanking and amplifying others’ work. Gratitude strengthens relationships and reinforces a culture of appreciation.
In leadership for social good, where work can be emotionally demanding, recognising contributions is not a ‘nice to have’ it is essential for sustaining energy and motivation.
“I will do my work honestly” → Transparency and democratic practice
Honesty aligns directly with the principle of difference and democracy, which encourages transparent, collective decision-making.
Leaders who act with integrity and openness invite others into the process. This builds trust and ensures that solutions are shaped by diverse perspectives not imposed from the top down.
“I will be kind to every living thing” → Generosity, empathy and community
Kindness sits at the heart of generosity and community-building. In practice, this means:
-
- Sharing knowledge freely
-
- Making space for others to lead
-
- Designing with empathy, not assumption
-
- Prioritising relationships over transactions
Kindness, when embedded in leadership, becomes a force for equity and inclusion.
Why This Matters Now
Social challenges today, whether climate change, health inequality, or community resilience are deeply interconnected. They cannot be solved through isolated efforts or purely technical solutions. They require:
-
- Emotional intelligence
-
- Collective intelligence
-
- Distributed leadership
-
- Trust-based collaboration
By combining Reiki principles with Collaborating Out Loud, leaders can cultivate all four.
A Practice, Not a Checklist
This approach is not about perfection. It is about practice. It is about:
-
- Checking in with your own energy before engaging others
-
- Showing up with intention and openness
-
- Sharing your thinking, not just your outcomes
-
- Creating space for others to shape the work
It is leadership that is felt as much as it is seen.
Leadership for social good is, at its core, relational work. It is about how we show up with ourselves, with others, and within systems that need change. Reiki grounds us internally and Collaborating Out Loud connects us externally.
Together, they offer a way of leading that is not only effective but deeply human.
